Performance Days 2025: technical textiles aim for circularity

4 Novembre 2024

Two days of energy, vision, and dynamic debate made Performance Days 2025 one of the most significant events dedicated to functional fabrics. With over 4,500 accredited professionals and 515 exhibitors from around the world, the event broke all previous records, marking a turning point for an industry increasingly focused on sustainability and responsible innovation.

This year’s guiding theme, “Textile to Textile: the role of recyclers,” was far more than a slogan – it inspired installations, materials, and discussions throughout the fair. In the large Trend Forum, the concept of recyclability became tangible: technical fabrics made from regenerated fibers, traceable yarns, and production processes designed to close the loop. A vision of circular economy that is no longer utopian, but a rapidly consolidating reality.

Among the most photographed highlights was the renewed Innovation Area, developed in collaboration with London’s Future Fabrics Expo, offering a true journey into the future of raw materials. Here, discussions centered on concrete alternatives to virgin polyester and conventional cotton, as well as on European regulations and transparent supply chains. Facing a focused and international audience, the message was clear: sustainability is no longer a technical option, but the new standard of competitiveness.

Alongside pure innovation, the Creative Area, curated by Nora Kühner, blended the languages of design and performance. Colors, textures, and upcycled garments illustrated an evolving aesthetic where “Fashion meets Function” is not just a claim but a shared design approach. Completing the picture, the Footwear Area hosted workshops on new sole and material technologies, engaging designers and visitors in hands-on experiences.

There was also space for in-depth exploration: the Wool Area, developed in collaboration with IWTO, Woolmark, and Campaign for Wool, refocused attention on wool as a natural fiber offering increasingly remarkable technical performance. Meanwhile, the Sustainability Lounge hosted more informal discussions, attracting a new generation of outdoor fashion professionals and startups.

On the day before the official opening, the DAY 0 Conference set the tone with an interactive format themed “In Nature There Is No Waste.” Workshops, dialogue, and experimentation replaced traditional presentations, turning the event into a think tank where the conversation went beyond materials to explore the culture of change.

Among the Expert Talks, debates on recycling, regulation, and innovation confirmed the high level of quality that PERFORMANCE DAYS has achieved. “We want to offer two days of inspiration and new connections,”  said Marco Weichert, ceo of the event. The outcome proved him right: the fair reaffirmed its role as a global crossroads for professionals working at the intersection of textile research, sustainability, and outdoor performance.

A highly positive outcome – one that sets the stage for an even more ambitious 2026 edition. Stay tuned for the full report in the next issue of Outdoor Magazine!
