The green commitment of MGM and Rekord

8 Ottobre 2024

Innovation, tradition, and commitment, these are the three pillars on which MGM Spa’s corporate strategy is based, with environmental sustainability as an integral component—thanks also to Rekord’s commitment.

It was on November 30, 2022, that MGM Spa announced the acquisition of the Rekord Srl Group, one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of high-end technical, sports, and outdoor footwear. The company has over 700 employees and three facilities located in the Alba Iulia area of Romania. Rekord is a cutting-edge operation not only in terms of production, but above all in terms of responsible commitment—an integral part of MGM Group’s corporate strategy. The Romanian headquarters has obtained ISO 14001:2015 Certification, which provides a rigorous framework for managing and continually improving environmental impact. It helps identify, control, and monitor the environmental effects of operations, ensuring compliance with environmental laws and sustainability goals.

Heritage

Rekord’s story dates back to 1980, with the founding of Calzaturificio Play Sport Srl by Alcide Giacometti in Montebelluna. It became Rekord Srl in 1994, following an expansion in production capacity and influence in the sector. Its transition under the leadership of MGM Spa, headed by the Congiu/Foglio family, marked a significant turning point—combining innovative production with strong creative planning. Keeping production in Europe became a key strategic point, ensuring superior quality, responsiveness to market demands, and sustainability. Today, Rekord employs over 700 professionals and has a production capacity exceeding one million pairs of shoes per year, making it one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of technical outdoor footwear.

I will leave no trace

In line with this philosophy, Rekord has improved several aspects of its production, starting with its energy supply, which is entirely based on renewable sources. 80% of the energy used comes from photovoltaic systems, with a total of 5,472 square meters of solar panels installed across its three facilities. Specifically, the Teiuș site has a power capacity of 300 kWp thanks to 654 solar panels covering a total area of 1,472 square meters. The remaining 20% of the energy is sourced from certified green suppliers. This significantly reduces the company’s carbon footprint and allows it to operate in an energy-autonomous and sustainable manner. But that’s not all—Rekord pays attention to every aspect of production, including materials used and packaging solutions. One example is the use of leather sourced from the food industry—a choice that supports the circular economy and responsible resource use. This reduces waste and ensures eco-friendly production processes without compromising product quality or durability. Finally, advanced automation further reduces waste, and the packaging is designed to be environmentally sustainable.

Social responsibility

In terms of overall responsibility, social responsibility is a key issue at Rekord, which firmly believes that people are the heart and most valuable resource of the company. For this reason, it has implemented policies and initiatives aimed at creating a fairer workplace—one that values talent and promotes both the personal and professional growth of its employees, with particular attention to protecting their rights, health, and safety. These efforts have been recognized with major certifications, including SA8000:2014 – Social Accountability, which attests to worker conditions. Additionally, Rekord is actively involved in social initiatives under the banner of “Rekord for the Community,” firmly believing in giving back and making a difference in people’s lives through targeted activities and programs. The company demonstrates that true progress is that which benefits everyone—sharing commercial success with those who have fewer opportunities and with the local area.

The three production hubs

Rekord is made up of three production facilities that strengthen its annual output capacity and reflect its commitment to maintaining high ethical and quality standards. The Alba Iulia facility, opened in 1994, was the first plant of the company, which at the time was known as Play Sport Srl. Today, it is the largest facility in the network, distinguished by its production scale and high standards in quality and social responsibility, as evidenced by its ISO 9001:2015 and SA8000:2014 certifications. The Teiuș facility was inaugurated in 2001 and currently holds the ISO 9001:2015 certification. This plant was designed with a strong focus on technology and energy efficiency and is home to part of the photovoltaic system supporting sustainable production. Lastly, the Zlatna hub was established in 2004 and also boasts ISO 9001:2015 certification, ensuring rigorous standards for quality and production process safety.
